Becak in Makassar
Pedicab (becak) is a public transportation that still exists in Makassar. Becak is still needed by the people of Makassar as a means of transportation. Even though the becak drivers are unable to compete with online transportation such as grab motorbikes, motorbike gojeks and there is also a modification of the becak into a motorized becak.
Around the 90s and below, becak became the main means of transportation in Makassar. At that time, there were very few private vehicle owners. That's why rickshaws are the main choice.
But after passing through the 90s, motorized transportation tools such as pete-pete and taxi began to appear. As a result, they have started to be eliminated so that most of the becak drivers are looking for other jobs. Most became carpenters, returned to their villages to farm, and some became itinerant vegetable and fish sellers.
If you want to try this means of transportation, you can still find it on the edge of traditional markets and suburban areas. And we can still see the Makassar city area. Even though becak drivers are prohibited from crossing the main road.
Becak can still be used to navigate the narrow alley. And similarly, rickshaws are still used to take consumers from the market to their homes around the market. The direction of cruising range is 5 km.
